From the smallest cabinet to major work on a building site, carpenters and joiners undertake a multitude of tasks with wood.

Joiners in Glasgow / Edinburgh Joiners / Leeds Joiner

The Difference between a Carpenter and a Joiner

Basically, the difference can be summarised in saying that a joiner makes it and a carpenter fits it. This is a slight over-simplification, but usually a joiner works indoors in a workshop and specialises in making up internal fittings such as doors, staircases and window frames. The real skill is in ensuring everything fits properly using the correct joints.

A carpenter may work outside or inside, on building sites installing framework, flooring, window frames and doors to new build properties. They may work on site on large engineering projects such as bridges and dams, or on smaller installations in and around the home.

Different Types of Carpenter

In many cases, carpenters specialise in certain aspects of the trade and this is reflected in their specific title.

Trim Carpenter – Specialises in moulding and trim such as windows, doors, casings and mantels.

Ship’s Carpenter – Self-explanatory: works on ship builds but could also include repairs.

Scenic Carpenter – Makes sets and scenery for television, film making and theatre.

Framer – Assembles the main structures for wood framed houses such as floors, joists and stud work.

Cabinet Maker - Self-evident, but encompasses all types of ‘cabinet’ such as wardrobes, dressers, storage chests and the like.

Carpenters and Joiners Work Roles

The roles cover one or more of the following depending on levels of specialisation.

First fixing (site work) – Fitting the large, main wooden structures such as floor and roof joists, staircases, door and window frames and partition walls.

Second fixing (site work) – Installation of doors, surrounds, skirting boards, cupboards, shelving and door handles.

Formwork - Building temporary shutters to support setting concrete on large projects such as bridges and building foundations.

Shopfitting – Constructing and fitting interiors for shops, hotels, offices and some public buildings such as libraries.

Machining – Shaping and cutting wood for floorboards, window frames and skirting boards.

Design/Bespoke Carpentry and Joinery

Some carpentry and joinery firms offer specific services depending on individual requirements. The use of CAD (computer aided design) can show the customer exactly how, say, hand-made home office furniture would look before any work is undertaken.

Bespoke carpentry of all types is available from some firms, so a unique solution to making a wardrobe to fit an awkward space or replacing the old patio doors with something more in keeping with the style of the property is possible.

The same bespoke option applies to larger projects such as individual self-build house constructions, or an overhaul/renovation of an existing property.

Heritage Craft

Some carpenters specialise in renovations of historical/listed buildings. This is a particular skill and often requires further training over and above standard carpentry and joinery training. The work here can range from renovating existing structures and contents to a major reconstruction using wood from the appropriate historical period (or as near as possible).

You may not be able to ascertain from the entry in the local directory whether or not the aerial fitter is a member of the CAI, so you will need to ask when you make contact. By selecting a member of the CAI to install your new aerial or get advice on which aerial to use, you will be assured of good service. You can check their credentials on line. The CAI take false representation regarding membership very seriously, and name and shame rogue traders on their web site. All members are trained in the art of aerial fitting and have the relevant qualifications. Look for tradesmen who have National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) or City and Guilds qualifications. The CAI offers courses to non members as well as members, so you will be able to make the necessary checks.

TV Aerials Sheffield / Aerials Liverpool / Manchester TV Aerials

An aerial fitter who is not a member of the CAI must at the very least understand how to fit an aerial, how to orientate it and tune in your television. If you have done some basic research yourself, you will know that the aerial should be pointed towards the nearest transmitter, and you can determine this by looking at your neighbours’ aerials. The aerial fitter should also understand about types of aerials and be able to help if you want new aerial sockets in different parts of the house. The aerial fitter should also be able to give advice on the use of indoor aerials and loft installations if you have more than one TV in the house.

Aerial Fitters Birmingham / Aerial Installers Leicester / Bristol Aerial Fitters

If you have recently moved to a new home and the previous owner has removed the aerial, installing new equipment so you can relax and watch television may be high priority. You can of course request that the vendor leaves the aerial in situ. Recommendations from friends and work colleagues are other ways of identifying a reputable aerial fitter.

The costs of fitting an aerial will vary, so make sure you get estimates from two or three aerial installers before making your decision. This is standard practice when selecting any tradesman. The main criteria when selecting an aerial fitter is that you will get a good job done, and there will be no necessity for a return visit.

As with other tradesmen, using a reputable reliable aerial fitter is essential. There is a bewildering array of aerials, and a professional tradesman should be able to guide you through the minefield and ensure that your aerial functions correctly and, in the case of outdoor an aerial, that it is securely fixed to your property. Your television viewing will depend on the aerial. Once you have found an aerial fitter you are happy with, make sure you keep his contact details handy in case you need them again.

Oven cleaning – the words just send a shiver down your spine, don’t they? Deep-cleaning your oven is a difficult task but nevertheless something that has to be done. But there are ways that you can make your life easier when it comes to oven cleaning.

Oven Cleaning Edinburgh / Cleaners Birmingham / Manchester Cleaners

First of all, treat the oven like you would any other area of your kitchen. If something spilled on the work surface, would you leave it there for three months? No. You’d clean it up within minutes wouldn’t you. Therefore, if a spillage happens in the oven, it’s best to get it cleared up as soon as you can. Granted, if the oven is hot at the time it isn’t always possible to get the spillage cleaned up immediately, but you should be cleaning it as soon as it’s cooled down enough to do so. Leaving spillages to bake on time and time again will only make it harder and harder to remove.

Cleaner in Liverpool / Cleaner Nottingham / Edinburgh Cleaner

When cleaning your oven, you need to get deep cleaning oven products. Oven cleaners often contain substances that are very dangerous due to the difficulty of burnt on food, so gloves should always be worn. Good oven cleaners will need to be left on for a few hours to soak in and work their magic, so don’t be expecting to get the job done in an hour. You may need to coat the inside of the oven and leave it overnight, then clean it off the following morning. Be prepared to use some real elbow grease! Oven cleaning often takes a good hour of continuous scrubbing to get it back to a like-new state, so you may want to get your favourite songs on and have a sing to keep you occupied and focused on the job.

Don’t neglect the outside of the oven. Of course, spillages still occur on the doors as you’re carrying things out, so make sure that you wipe these up too. If a spillage has been left for a little while, you may need to use a tough cleaning products to help.

It is important that you do your oven degreasing on a monthly basis, but that you also wipe up spillages as they occur to reduce the amount of time it takes to clean it on your big monthly clean. If you’re really struggling to get your oven gleaming, perhaps it’s best to consider using a local cleaning company. Many cleaners these days offer oven cleaning and oven degreasing services and will be able to use industrial strength cleaning products to work on tough stains and burns.

The same rules apply to microwaves. Microwaves can also suffer from burnt on food stains and spillages, but by keeping on top of the cleaning and doing it as a spillage occurs, you can save hours of cleaning time in the future. A lot of professional cleaners also offer microwave cleaning services as part of their oven cleaning packages, so why not get someone to do the hard work for you!

End of tenancy cleaning is relevant for both tenants and landlords (or their letting agents).

Cleaners Birmingham / Carpet Cleaners Manchester / Cleaner Glasgow

Tenants

The tenancy agreement will almost certainly stipulate a required level of cleanliness when the rental property is vacated. The return of all or part of the initial deposit may hinge on whether a full clean of the property is required. Exactly how clean a property should be is sometimes a grey area, but from the tenant’s point of view the question to ask is ‘how did the property look when I moved in?’ A minimum requirement would be to return the property to the same state.

Sheffield Cleaners / Cleaners in Leicester / Liverpool Cleaner

Landlords/letting agents

When letting a property, it is clearly important to present a clean and tidy environment to potential tenants. The property will be more appealing, safe and hygienic as possible and thus be let out sooner. This is important as, if furnished with included appliances, these can become dangerous and unfit for purpose if allowed to become contaminated with, say, dried food in microwave ovens or the kettle furring up with limescale.

By presenting the incoming tenant with a pristine, clean property landlords can reasonably expect it to be left in the same condition when the tenant moves out.

What Is An End of Tenancy Clean?

It is a thorough, deep clean of a property and can cover all aspects of a property from a clean of the largest carpet to a full hygienic clean of a teaspoon. It will vary in its scope depending on the cleanliness of the property. For example, here is an extract from a list of cleaning tasks from a London-based cleaning company providing end of tenancy cleaning services. This list is only some of the tasks listed for one room – the kitchen:

Wash and polish all work surfaces

Clean sink and taps and remove lime scale and polish where required

Clean oven internally to remove built up grease

Clean and defrost refrigerator removing grime, mildew and food deposits

Clean exterior of all appliances including kettle, toaster.

Contamination and Health Considerations

Over a period of time contaminants such as chemicals, pollutants and mites can proliferate in even the best-kept property. For example, mites multiply at astonishing rates and a deep clean of carpets (only one area where they are found) will be required. Mites and pollutants can cause a health hazard – mites have been proven to cause asthma, for example.

Use a Specialist End of Tenancy Cleaner or Do It Yourself?

Scope of a deep clean – Just cleaning, say, an oven is a time-consuming and specialist task.

Cost – An end of tenancy clean by a specialist may cost around £200 (price from a Nottingham-based company including carpet cleaning of a small two-bedroom terraced property). There again, a DIY clean will require much time and purchase of materials and possible hiring of cleaning machinery.

Reassurance – A specialist company should be properly insured and offer a satisfaction guarantee.

The roof is an essential part any house. It not only protects you and your belongings but it can also add, or detract, from the value of your home. So when your roof starts leaking it is important to know the cause and the best course of action.

Roof Repairs Sheffield / Roofers Birmingham / Roofer Manchester

For the most part, weathering and lack of proper maintenance are the main culprits for roof leaks. The best way of preventing a leak is to ensure you keep your roof well maintained; this will not only halt the effect of weathering but save you time and money in the long term. Flat roofing is especially prone to leakages – ensure the material you are thinking of using for your flat roof is appropriate for your home, but do be prepared that no matter what kind of roofing it is, weathering will have an effect over the years. On top of all this, any additions to your roof – such as antennas, flag poles or any kind of equipment – will obviously compromise the roofing. Here an easy solution is to avoid mounting them on your rooftop in the first place and affixing them to a support structure instead.

Roofing Sheffield / Manchester Roofers / Roofer Birmingham

More specifically, leakages can arise when problems with the flashing occur. Flashing is the seal between the roofing material and the other parts of the roof’s structure. If your roof is leaking, the flashing is the first place to check for signs of wear and tear. Its purpose is to be watertight and, understandably, if there is a fault with the flashing, leaks are more likely and can become quite serious. When it comes to roofing, the drain flashing is important and drain flashing problems can be caused by a number of things, including debris in the drainage system and too few drains being used. Of course, if the water cannot escape via the drains, then leaks will occur.

So what can be done to minimise damage to your home when your roof is leaking? Firstly, you should protect the interior of the house. Plastic sheets and buckets will help catch the water and protect your home. Of course, the next step is to locate the source of the leak. Check the flashing, the state of the roof and whether there any obvious sources for the leak. It may also be helpful to inspect the flashing around the chimney as this can be especially prone to problems. The drains are the next place to check – once you have located the problem you can begin to fix the roofing and stop the leak.

Now you know what can cause roofing to leak, you should regularly inspect your roof and maintain it properly. Weathering is of course something that cannot be avoided, but particularly in the case of flat roofing, you should carefully research the best kind of material to use for maximum protection against the elements. It is perfectly possible to attempt to fix the leak yourself, but consulting a professional roofer is always recommended for something so essential to your home.

Harry Houdini was the master of escapology. Much of his act was about releasing himself from seemingly inescapable situations. Of course he would not have devised a trick knowing that he would not be able to escape. He would need to know the workings of the equipment and could not leave this to others or to chance. You could say that the making and breaking of the locking mechanisms made him a locksmith.

So are the locksmiths of today our modern Houdinis? They are not doing the job to thrill the crowds or travel the world wagering with people that they can escape from any handcuffs as Houdini did. They are however responsible for the creation of security systems which hopefully cannot be broken into. Just as Houdini did, they have to develop systems which are more secure and improve upon them as others discover ways of breaking them.

As with all inventions someone has to initially imagine that something can happen or be made. They have to come up with an idea or concept. This takes forward thinking and imagination. You could also say that there is almost a magical feel about it. Most people would associate the work of a locksmith with the traditional ways of working with metalwork. We are familiar with the counters in the shopping centres where we can get keys cut or the mobile locksmiths in their vans visiting places to replace broken locks or break into them as someone has lost their keys. Would we generally think that locksmiths were responsible for thinking up the security systems for businesses? Probably not.

A locksmith will use all of their skills to develop systems and at the same time try to work out how they could be breached. This would help them to check that they are secure. Houdini would expand his act to more daring tricks to continue to please and amaze the crowds. For example with his Chinese Water Torture trick he would be placed in stocks upside down, padlocked and placed into a tank of water. The crowds wanted to see more daring displays. They wanted to know that Houdini was being tested. Today it is no longer just the case of a simple lock being enough to secure everything. Things need varying degrees of security either due to monetary value or safety, for example, a bank vault or a power plant. They may also require different types of security/locking systems. Locksmiths are required to be creative and work out the best combinations for the safekeeping.

Unfortunately there will always be people who will try to break into things and property. They become more sophisticated in their methods. It is therefore the job of the locksmith to be one step ahead of them and be more inventive. They need to think like an intruder. There is little use using a system which could be easily breached. This calls for the locksmith to think outside of the box or even throw out the box altogether. This is another thing shared with the Great Houdini.

You may not need to update or buy new aerial equipment to receive a digital signal. There is no such thing as a ‘digital aerial’ so the installation you currently have may well be sufficient. It may even perform better as the digital signal is being transmitted more powerfully than the old analogue one.

The Transmitter

This is the starting point for ascertaining whether your present aerial installation is suitable for digital. If you have a ‘grouped frequency’ aerial as opposed to a wideband one, then you may need to change ONLY IF your transmitter has changed its frequency groupings as part of turning digital.

Each transmitter transmits using a portion of the overall frequency range for TV broadcasts. If you have a grouped frequency aerial, it will match the transmitter’s frequency groups. If your transmitter has changed groupings, then your aerial will no longer be compatible so you will require one matching the transmitter’s new frequency groupings.

How To Find Out If Your Transmitter Has Changed Frequency Groupings

Go to the Ofcom website and look up your region. A document containing details of all the transmitters in your region is available for free download. This will show whether transmitters in your region have, or are about to, change frequency groupings. If so, the new grouping will be shown expressed as a letter. You would need a new aerial matching this letter code.

If you have a wideband aerial, then it is unlikely to matter what frequency changes your transmitter may be making. A wideband aerial is designed to receive a signal across the entire frequency range used for TV broadcast, so you will continue to be able to receive a signal.

The ‘Digital Cliff Edge’

This is where the digital picture literally ‘falls off a cliff’ and fails completely and suddenly. An analogue signal gradually tapers off as quality reduces, so even when conditions are poor something will appear on the TV screen. With digital, the signal is either there or it is not: the picture might be fine, then at the point of degradation you will experience blocking and freezing followed abruptly by no picture at all. A graph displaying this would resemble a horizontal and vertical line meeting and forming a right angle (the ‘cliff edge’).

To keep your signal on the ‘right side’ of this digital cliff edge, the use of a higher quality (of construction) aerial and cabling MAY POSSIBLY be required. This is something to consider perhaps once you are using digital and can ascertain the level of signal reliability you are experiencing. There is no need to spend money unnecessarily – upgrading can be done retrospectively.

A Reliable Digital Aerial Installation

Simply put, it is any installation receiving a digital signal well enough to afford reliable viewing. ‘Reliable’ is the operative word: in order to minimise or (ideally) eradicate the effects of the ‘digital cliff edge’ as described above. Therefore, your present set up may well be all you require.

Basically, landscape gardening is the implementation of a fully designed garden. It can cover the entire range of possible gardening tasks starting with the concept and design, the construction of paths and garden features such as rockeries and ponds and the detailed implementation of planting plans and lawns.

Landscape gardening is a highly specialised field, and niche experts abound along with ‘generalist’ landscape gardening professionals. For example, there are companies and individuals specialising in lawns. They can help you (or your landscape gardening firm if they subcontract work to them) to fine tune a lawn design, turf or seed it, and advise and provide ongoing maintenance help in the months and years ahead.

Garden Design

A landscape gardening project will start with a vision or concept. A rough design can be fleshed out by a landscape gardening professional to incorporate the client’s own ideas and desired features. For example, is a water feature required? Is there a requirement for space to entertain? If so, is a patio or decking the best option?

Can the client afford to spend time maintaining the garden? If not, perhaps low maintenance plants/features should be considered.

Construction

Perhaps the existing garden is being mildly altered, or maybe it is a complete overhaul? Landscape garden construction can veer into builder’s territory when the project demands major upheaval. Indeed, some clients use builders for the basic construction phase of a landscape gardening project as opposed to a landscape gardener.

Construction tasks can include major ground levelling and shaping. Other construction could be building paths, installing patios and decking, erecting fences and digging out the ground for a water feature such as a pond.

Planting Plans

The basic positioning of flower beds and other planting areas will have taken place at the design and planning stage, but specific planning in terms of what to plant and where will be undertaken. This aspect of landscape gardening is important for two reasons.

Firstly, there is the aesthetic appeal of certain plants and flowers combining with each other in terms of their colours when they bloom. Secondly, it matters for ensuring the plants and flowers flourish. Is the planting area/flower bed going to receive enough sunlight? If not, plants that can manage with less light may be required in certain low light areas.

Soil type and condition is crucial when planning what types of plants/flowers to plant and where. Indeed, this is an important element of landscape gardening generally – it will affect aspects such as laying a lawn and planting new trees. What remedial steps can be taken if the soil is in poor condition? Soil is another area where specific gardening expertise may be required, and plant planning or lawn experts can provide help here.

Overall

Landscape gardening designed and implemented by experts will help effectively utilise whatever garden space is available. Whether it is a small balconied flat to a country house, a full landscape gardening solution can be achieved.

When you suddenly find you can’t use the toilet or the sink won’t drain properly, it can seem like a nightmare to unblock yourself. You may even think that you could be causing more problems by checking for the problem or deciding to do a DIY job and end up making the leak or blockage even worse as a result.

Plumbers Sheffield | Plumbers Bristol | Plumbers Edinburgh / Manchester Plumbers

This is an issue that many homeowners face at one point or another. But unless you’re fully trained however, it’s not wise to try and fix it yourself. A problem with your kitchen or bathroom’s water, draining or sewerage system is plumbers’ work and must be inspected by a professional who knows what they are looking for and how to fix it quickly.

Plumbers Glasgow | Boiler repairs Nottingham | Plumber in Leicester

When hiring plumbers, whether for your house or a business, you will need to be aware of what to look out for and ensure you hire someone reputable. Good points to look out for include looking for plumbers who are licensed. Plumbers registering with reputable organisations such as the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors, which establishes competency amongst plumbers and trade professionals is a good place to start looking. The APHC will only work with plumbers and trade professionals who are recognised to carry out the standard required from heating and plumbing work. A plumber registered with the APHC will usually display a Competent Persons Scheme badge somewhere, even on the advert or on their website, depending on how and where you find the plumber to do the job.

Plumbers will be able to perform a variety of duties which include maintenance work as well as the installation of water, draining, sewage and plumbing systems. Whilst at first it may sound easy to replace a pipe, upon embarking on the job many homeowners find the waterworks system is not quite as straight forward as it looks and what may seem at first like an easy job which will save you some money can then cost even more to get fixed than it would’ve done to initially hire a plumber in the first place.

When thinking about hiring plumbers, perhaps as part of your organisation or agency, it’s important to work out the basics such as how much their charge rate is for any kind of repairs or construction work. This is often determined by an estimate based on how damaged the area is. You must be way however, as some plumbers also charge an estimate fee, even if you don’t choose to use their services. It is good practice to get an estimate written down so you know for future reference where to avoid the extra costs.

Should any of the plumbing work go wrong or an accident occur, it is vital that plumbers be insured as any manner of fire, flood or small disaster could happen which damages the house or causes injuries. Ask for this insurance before plumbing work begins to ensure protection, liability and ultimately peace of mind you deserve for your home.

Flat roofs are a most inexpensive solution to roofing sheds, garages and extensions, but you may have been put off by the bad press they’ve received in the past. Flat roofs have had a reputation for leakiness and requiring a high level of maintenance, but this is no longer the case. Scientifically tested materials manufactured to the highest standards and modern methods of installation have resulted in flat roofs that offer high performance and longevity.

Roofing Leicester, Flat roofing Leicester, Roofing Glasgow, Roof repairs Glasgow, Roofing Derby, Roofers Edinburgh

The single ply roofing membrane has revolutionised the flat roofing industry. Manufactured from a variety of materials including synthetic rubber and PVC, this waterproof membrane is very long lasting and remains stable in extremes of heat and cold. Single ply roofing membrane is also unaffected by moisture in the atmosphere, oxidation and radiation from the sun’s rays. When sheets of single ply roofing membrane are spread across the roofing surface and self-sealed, or joined using heat, the resulting protective shell stops any water from seeping into the building. For health and safety reasons, a single ply membrane flat roof needs to be installed by a roofing company experienced in this field. Single ply membrane roofing is particularly suitable for domestic dwellings, as it can be expected to last up to 40 years and should not require much maintenance.

The cheapest option remains the familiar felt and asphalt flat roof, the favourite of DIY enthusiasts. Felt and asphalt roofs are ideal for small buildings like outhouses. Three layers of felt, specially treated with a waterproofing agent like asphaltic bitumen, protect the building from rain and damp and insulate against heat and cold. The felt can be manufactured using natural or synthetic materials. There are different ways of installing felt and asphalt roofs. Roofing contractors will use the latest techniques and materials, so it would be wise to hire one if you want a felt and asphalt roof that will need little upkeep. Some companies offer a 20 year guarantee.

Flat roofs are classed as cold or warm, according to the positioning of the insulation. In a cold system, the insulation is placed inside the main structure. The disadvantage is that the quantity of insulation used is restricted by the amount of space between the ceiling and the deck. To prevent warm air condensing into moisture on the cold deck and causing decay, the space between the insulation and the deck must be well ventilated. The advantage of a warm system is that you can use as much insulation as you like, as the insulation is placed outside the deck, on top of the main structure. The building is kept warm and at an even temperature, preventing the formation of condensation inside.

UK building regulations recommend warm roofs as they save energy. Cold systems may still be suitable for buildings like outhouses. If you want to use your building to store items that could be damaged if exposed to damp, you could contact a roofing or insulation company that specialises in converting cold systems to warm.
